What is GUE?
Explorers, educators and scientists - dedicated to bringing quality education, research, and environmental awareness to the scuba diving community, developed Global Underwater Explorers. I am pleased to be able to offer GUE introductory course here in South Africa. GUE diving has positively changed my scuba experience and I hope to share this enthusiasm and regard for fun & safety, with you. I look forward to training with you!

Who is GUE Fundamentals for?
The GUE Fundamentals course is designed for any diver that desires to get the most out of their diving. Whether you are a newly certified open water diver or a seasoned veteran many divers have found that by incorporating DIR principles into their diving practices the increase both safety and fun. South Africa’s group of GUE divers is growing – join us and experience the difference in our diver dedication to team, safety and how it increases the fun in diving!


Why Fundamentals?
This course will begin your adventure into GUE style diving. You will learn precision buoyancy and apropriate propulsion techniques that will help you in all diving environments - from your every day reef dives to wreck or cave exploration. All divers will benefit from the team awareness, individual assessment of skills, and diver interaction over the 3 days course.


What are the requirements?
• Participants must be 16 years or older
• Participants must have Open water Certification
• Participants must be able to swim at least 200 yards
• Participants must be able to swim a distance of at least 40' (15m) on a breath hold


What equipment will I need for class?
All equipment needed for this course is available at Divemasters in Parow, and your instructor or a member of their staff will professionally fit your system. If you do not own your own DIR style equipment, there are a limited number of appropriately configured dive systems for rental during the course. Please plan ahead to reserve yours if this is an option for you, please inquire for rates.

  • The following equipment is strongly recommended for this course:
    • Backplate style BC System
    SS or Aluminum Back plate with web harness and hardware.
    Back inflate style wing.

    • At least one depth-measuring device
    • At least one time-keeping device
    • At least one cutting device
    • Fins: Non-split variety
    • Underwater Notes w/ pencil
    • One Spool with min. 100 feet of line
    • One Surface Marker Buoy (SMB) or lift bag
    • Exposure suit appropriate for the environment you will be diving in
    • Regulators and DIR hose configuration
    5 or 7ft Primary Regulator hose
    22 or 24" necklace Regulator hose
    24 or 26" SPG hose

    • Suggested Accessories (not required, but nice)
    Waist mounted canister dive light with Goodman handle or long hose catch such as a knife pouch
    • Cylinders:
    Single tank configuration (need 2 per day for diving)
    Double tank configuration (1 per day of diving)

How long is the course?
This course is usually conducted over a 3 1/2 day period, but it can be customized for groups of divers with more than 3 participating. You will partake in classroom sessions (location TBD) on Thursday and Friday evenings. Saturday and Sunday are a combination of dry-land drills, openwater training dives (confined beach or pool) and classroom sessions with team/dive debrief.
