I began my 5-day 'overland' tour in Johannesburg (JHB). I hopped on a mini-tour to the Soweto area. Soweto is a township/city just outside JHB, which has historical significance in the fight to end apartheid. It was an interesting afternoon and I am glad I was able to spend the time here learning about the complex history of this beautiful country.
Jacaranda Tree (my favorite!) at the Emerald Inn Guest house in Johannesburg.
My basic room at the Inn. Affordable, quiet, pretty clean, and free airport shuttle. (:
Jacaranda lined street in Johannesburg.
Middle class corner in Soweto.
Local barbers in Soweto.
Veggie Market in Soweto.
Reality bites - this is a common scene in many areas.
Former cooling towers 'redecorated' with local historial & cultural images.
Looking back toward Soweto.

Photos of Nelson Mandela before he was taken to prison for his 27 year sentence.
This bedspread (jackal hides) was a gift to honor his leadership.
Apparently these are Nelson Mandela's boots from his military service. I thought they looked cool sitting on the trunk.
The entrance to his former home in Soweto is the one he lived in prior to being taken to prison.
Curio stand. Lots of fun to poke around in.
The famous photograph taken during the 1976 Soweto protests in which many students were killed by police when protesting against being mandated to be educated in Afrikaans language.
The memorial to those that died during the protests. It was too big to fit in one photo.
The other part.
The 'rear' view is water flowing from the memorial. Signifying the tears for all those lost during the protests.
A full view of the memorial.
Map of Soweto area. Behind there is the museum we toured dedicated to the 1976 protests at this location.
